CLEVELAND — The Tampa Bay Rays moved within one win of the World Series on Sunday night, beating the Cleveland Guardians 3–1 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. The Associated Press reported the game. Drew Rasmussen allowed one run on four hits over seven innings. It was his second win of the postseason. Tampa Bay scored once in each of the first three innings and then held on. Jonny DeLuca, the outfielder, said of standing behind Rasmussen, "It gets kind of boring out there because it's incredible the stuff he has. But you like that because he's your teammate." Cleveland had five hits. Manager Stephen Vogt said, "We need to rebound tomorrow. I know we're going to have a tough matchup tomorrow. But we need to get guys on base and we need to score runs."

The series is 3–2. Game 6 is Monday night at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, at 8 p.m. Eastern, on TBS. A Game 7, if it is needed, is Tuesday. Since the league championship series became a best of seven in 1985, the road team that won Game 5 for a 3–2 lead has won the series four times in five, the Associated Press noted. The Rays are trying for their third pennant and their first since 2020. The winner plays the Milwaukee Brewers, who swept the Los Angeles Dodgers. Neither the Rays nor the Brewers has won a World Series.
