CLEVELAND — The Tampa Bay Rays evened the American League Championship Series at two games apiece on Saturday night, beating the Cleveland Guardians 7–3. Joe Reedy of the Associated Press reported the game. Jonathan Aranda’s single in the seventh scored two runs when the ball got past right fielder Chase DeLauter. Nick Martinez pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowed one run on two hits, and won his first postseason game. Yandy Díaz added a two-run homer in the ninth. Junior Caminero’s double in the sixth had put Tampa Bay ahead, 2–1. Aranda finished with three hits and two runs batted in after going 0 for 10 in the first three games of the series. Díaz, Aranda, Chandler Simpson, and Caminero, the first four hitters, had six of Tampa Bay’s 11 hits and drove in six runs. They had gone 7 for 41 with three runs batted in over the first three games.
“A lot of really good at-bats. A lot of hard hits,” manager Kevin Cash said. “But overall, just happy that Junior squared some balls up, Aranda came through in a big way for us and then Yandy there at the end with a add-on homer.” Aranda said, through translator Kevin Vera, “It was just a matter of time to get going. We can use this going forward.” Cleveland’s Travis Bazzana hit his first postseason home run and also made an error at second. Game 5 is Sunday in Cleveland. Game 6 is Monday in St. Petersburg. The winner plays the Milwaukee Brewers, who swept the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League pennant.
